The National Service Scheme (NSS) in India is a voluntary public
service program for students at the college and university level. It was
established in 1969 with the aim of developing social consciousness,
promoting community service, and fostering national integration and
development. The NSS is managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs
and Sports in collaboration with various educational institutions.
Since 2013 with 1.5 unit capacity, our college Students participate in
the NSS engage in various activities such as community development,
healthcare campaigns, literacy programs, environmental conservation,
and disaster management.
These activities are intended to instil a
sense of responsibility, empathy, and leadership skills among the
youth. Participation in the NSS is voluntary (on the principle of “not
me but you”, emphasizing the importance of selfless service to
society), and students actively engage in activities can earn
certificates and gain additional weightage in their academic
evaluations. The program not only contributes to the social
development of communities but also helps students in their personal
growth and character building.
The NSS has been instrumental in creating a positive impact on
society by addressing various social issues and contributing to the
welfare of marginalized communities. It promotes the spirit of
national service and encourages young people to act.
